Relevant Thematic Competences and Experiences
OMRIN (AFD) is the leading circular waste processor in the Netherlands, serving as a trusted knowledge partner for municipalities and provinces in achieving their VANG objectives. OMRIN possesses expertise in optimizing waste collection, transportation, and circular processing to generate reusable energy and materials. The company annually produces 14 million m3 of biogas; a portion of which fuels waste transport to processing facilities.
Role in the Project
In the project, AFD/OMRIN will showcase a use case where waste is transported in specialized containers, designed for efficient loading and unloading at Vlaardingen and Heerenveen mooring points. This will reduce 7,200 annual truck movements to 96 ship movements; all powered by its self-produced biogas.
WP1:
- FFC Building
- Designing and development of quay terminals
- Designing dedicated waste containers
WP2:
- Creating of a digital twin (virtual model of waterway and sailing barge) for optimizing the first, middle, and last miles of the process, allowing testing before making investments
- Facilitating an operational IWT transport pilot on the Vlaardingen-Heerenveen route, along with a white paper detailing the use-case and project results
WP3:
- Scaling up the process, as outlined in the whitepaper and represented in the digital twin, to NSR regions for use in similar waste cargo flows and other flows that produce biogas as part of the circular process
Benefits of Participation
Participating in the InnoWaTr2.0 project presents several benefits to OMRIN:
-
Gain insights into effective cooperation and adopt best practices from other FFCs
-
Incorporate and learn from different approaches, such as waste streams in Ghent and alternative propulsion methods like H2, Sogestran, and Electric Ghent
-
Expand OMRIN's unique process to other regions and sectors
-
Learn from other pilot projects to navigate certification, regulations, and safety considerations when operating on biogas-powered vessels.
